Leisure and recreation needs will be different for diverse groups. Depending on the time available for participation, physical ability, age, gender, cultural background and other social and environmental factors, people will have different leisure and recreational needs. People/groups with particular leisure and recreational needs include the elderly, people with a disability, young people seeking a challenge and more. There are also specific needs of the community such as physical, social, emotional, spiritual and cognitive activities.
Elderly –
Around 20% of the population of the Dundorra community is elderly, and there’s not many leisure and recreation facilities available for them. There are some facilities available for the elderly such as the bowling green, but there needs to be more facilities available, both physical and nonphysical. It was shown from the Australian bureau of statistics, a significant percentage of elderly people enjoy and participate in many physical leisure and recreation activities such as walking, gardening, fitness classes, swimming and more. As well as physical activities, the elderly enjoy and participate in cultural leisure and recreational activities such as art galleries, museums, zoos, theatres, libraries and cinemas. The rural country town of Dundorra doesn’t have many of these facilities and the elderly of Dundorra need them to enjoy there time.
People with a disability –
Around 8% of the population of the Dundorra community is disabled both physical and mentally. There are some facilities available for the disabled but not many. There are basketball courts that the physically disabled can play on but not really anything else. The disabled need leisure and recreation facilities that have easy access, they need modified equipment and rules, transport to and from facilities, they need carers. They disable are generally more passive in leisure and recreation activities so they will need facilities like pools and libraries, facilities that have ramps and lifts, they might also need disability fitness classes.
Young people seeking a challenge -
Around 36% of the population of the Dundorra community is young people (under the age of 15) seeking a challenge. Young people mostly enjoy and participate in physical leisure and recreation activities. There needs to be more physical facilities brought into the community of Dundorra such as fitness classes as well as facilities that need to be improved such as the oval, swimming pool and netball courts. As well as physical facilities they need spiritual activities such as art classes, etc.
